Often used to indicate that something happens unexpectedly, mostly in written or formal contexts.

1 早上还是晴天，不料下午就下起了大雨。(It was sunny in the morning, but unexpectedly it rained heavily in the afternoon.)
2 他本想按时到达，不料路上堵车，迟到了半小时。(He intended to arrive on time, but unexpectedly encountered a traffic jam and was half an hour late.)
