How the test works
The test is adaptive. It starts at a level matching your study background, then asks one exam-style listening or reading question at a time — the same formats as the real exam. Answer well and the next question comes from a higher level; miss and it steps down. After at most 8 questions it has bracketed your level and recommends where to start practicing.
Every question follows the new HSK standard (often called HSK 3.0), published in December 2025 and in effect since July 2026. Your result links straight into level-appropriate practice, backed by the full HSK dictionary and grammar reference.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the level test?
Every question is an exam-style HSK question from our practice bank. The test adapts as you go: answer well and it moves up a level, miss and it moves down, until your level is pinned down. Treat the result as a strong starting point — a few practice sessions at that level will confirm it.
Do I need an account to take the test?
No. The test is free and runs without signing up. If you create a free account afterwards, your result carries over and practice starts at your level.
Does it use the new HSK format (HSK 3.0)?
Yes. Questions follow the new HSK standard published in December 2025 and in effect since July 2026, so you are tested on the current exam format — not the old one.
Which skills does the test cover?
Listening and reading, using real exam question formats — only quick question types, so the test stays short. Writing and long reading passages are not part of the level test, but you can practice them after signing up. If you can't play audio right now, skip the audio questions during the test and your level is measured on reading alone.
How long does the test take?
About 3 minutes. It asks up to 8 questions and usually stops earlier, as soon as your level is clear.
