Definition

指形式上的、表面的名称或身份，也指以某种名义做某事。

Refers to the formal or superficial name or identity; also used to indicate doing something in the name of something.

Usage

常用于表示某事在名义上如此但实际可能不同，或表示以某人的名义、以某种理由进行活动。

Often used to indicate that something is so in name but may be different in reality, or to indicate acting in the name of someone or for a certain reason.

Examples

  • 1 他名义上是经理，实际上什么也不管。 (He is the manager in name only, but actually doesn't manage anything.)
  • 2 我们以全体会员的名义发表了一份声明。 (We issued a statement in the name of all members.)
  • 3 这个组织名义上是个慈善机构，但背后有商业目的。 (This organization is nominally a charity, but has commercial purposes behind it.)
  • 4 他以学习的名义借走了我的书，却一直没有还。 (He borrowed my book under the pretext of studying, but hasn't returned it.)
