Definition

表示因果关系中的原因或事实，相当于“由于”、“已经”。

Since; as; now that; indicating a cause or fact that is already known.

Usage

用于复句的前一分句，提出已知的事实或原因，后一分句则根据这个事实或原因得出结论或提出行动。常与“就”、“也”、“还”等搭配。

Used in the first clause of a compound sentence to state a known fact or reason, and the second clause draws a conclusion or proposes an action based on that fact. Often used with '就', '也', '还' etc.

Examples

1 既然你来了，我们就开始吧。 (Since you are here, let's start.)
2 既然他不愿意，那就算了。 (Since he is unwilling, then forget it.)
3 既然已经决定了，就不要后悔。 (Since it has been decided, don't regret it.)
4 既然你生病了，就好好休息。 (Since you are sick, take a good rest.)
5 既然大家都同意，我就没有异议了。 (Since everyone agrees, I have no objection.)
