Definition

“总”有多个进阶用法：作为副词表示“总是、一直”；表示“总归、毕竟”；表示“总得、必须”；还有“总不至于”、“总算是”、“总的来说”等固定搭配。

Advanced uses of '总' include: as an adverb meaning 'always, constantly'; indicating 'after all, anyway'; expressing 'must, have to'; and fixed phrases like 'shouldn't be so... as to', 'finally, at last', 'generally speaking'.

Usage

用于强调某种情况必然发生或状态持续；表达推断或结论；表示无奈或必须；常用于固定搭配中，如‘总不至于’表示反诘，‘总算是’表示终于，‘总的来说’表示总结。

Used to emphasize inevitability or persistence; to express inference or conclusion; to indicate necessity or resignation; often used in fixed phrases such as 'zong buzhi yu' for rhetorical questions, 'zong suanshi' for eventual completion, 'zong de lai shuo' for summarizing.
