GrammarStructure
Definition
Both 居然 and 反而 are adverbs expressing unexpectedness or contrast in Chinese, but with different emphases. 居然 emphasizes that something happens surprisingly and unexpectedly; 反而 emphasizes that the result is contrary to expectation or common sense.
Usage
居然 is often used when the speaker feels surprised or astonished about something, carrying subjective emotion; 反而 is used for contrast, indicating that the following situation contradicts the previous logic or forms a contrast. Both can appear in a sentence, but positions differ: 居然 usually placed after the subject and before the predicate; 反而 can be placed before or after the subject, but often at the beginning of the second clause.
