Definition

总算表示经过较长时间的等待或努力后，最终达到了预期的结果或状态，带有一种‘终于可以松一口气’的释然或满足感。终于也表示最终发生或完成，但更强调时间上的最后，语气较中性。

These two words both indicate that something finally happens or is achieved after a period of waiting or effort. However, 总算 carries a sense of relief or satisfaction, emphasizing that the result is as expected after difficulties. 终于 is more neutral, simply stressing the final occurrence in time.

Usage

总算常用于口语，表达经过一番周折后如愿以偿的心情；终于则可用于口语和书面语，客观描述事情的最终发生。二者有时可互换，但总算不能用于消极或意外的结局，而终于可用于任何结局。

总算 is often used in spoken Chinese to express a feeling of relief or satisfaction after a struggle; 终于 can be used in both spoken and written language to objectively state that something finally happens. They are sometimes interchangeable, but 总算 cannot be used for negative or unexpected outcomes, while 终于 can be used for any outcome.
