Softening the tone of questions with 呢 ("ne")
呢
ParticleStructure
Definition
The particle 呢 (ne) is used at the end of questions to soften the tone, making the question sound more polite, casual, or friendly.
Usage
呢 (ne) is often used at the end of interrogative sentences, especially when the question might seem direct or abrupt. It is common in wh-questions (with question words like who, what, where) and alternative questions. It is generally not used in yes-no questions (which use 吗). For example: '你怎么去呢?' is softer than '你怎么去?'.
