了 (le) is often used to express a completed action in the past or a change of state, and can be placed after a verb or at the end of a sentence. 了 (liǎo) as a verb often collocates with other words, such as '了结' (to end) and '了解' (to understand); or serves as a complement indicating possibility, as in '做得了' (can do it).
